Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary is a lush, 9.6 km² (960 ha) protected forest in Jalpaiguri district, West Bengal, adjoining Gorumara National Park—separated only by the Murti River. It was first declared a reserve in 1895 and upgraded to a wildlife sanctuary in 1998.

Iconic species: Asian elephants thrive here, alongside Indian bison (gaur). Other wildlife includes rhinoceros (occasionally spotted), leopards, wild boar, spotted deer (chital), sambar, and barking deer.

Birdlife paradise: More than 100 species are recorded-kingfishers, green magpies, treepies, scarlet minivets, hornbills, fishing eagles, adjutant storks, and many migratory species in winter like teals and Brahminy ducks.

Flora: Dominated by Sal, teak, shishu, siris trees, with orchids adding seasonal blooms.

Jeep Safari & Watchtower: Safaris (organized via forest department) include entry, guide, and vehicle-usually open‑top Gypsies. The watchtower near Murti River offers great wildlife and bird‑watching vantage.

Riverside recreation: Murti and Jaldhaka rivers border the sanctuary, making it perfect for serene picnics, boating, and photography.

By road: 68–72 km from Siliguri (2–2.5 h drive); also accessible via Chalsa (20 km), Lataguri (30 km), and Murti (10 km).

By train: Nearest stations: Malbazar/New Mal (15 km), Chalsa (7 km), New Jalpaiguri (60–70 km).

By air: Bagdogra Airport (75 km); hire a cab for onward travel.

Open season: Mid‑September/October to mid‑June (closed during monsoon: mid‑June to mid‑September).

Peak wildlife spotting: November to March, with pleasant weather and increased wildlife activity.
